China: Release Dhondup Wangchen!
Dear aouinet,
We've received news that Dhondup Wangchen, the Tibetan
filmmaker who made the ground-breaking documentary,
Leaving Fear Behind, has been charged
with "inciting separatism" and is awaiting trial in Siling in
eastern Tibet (Chinese: Xining, Qinghai Province). Chinese
authorities have barred his lawyers from representing him,
casting serious doubt over the fairness of the trial
process.
Please take urgent
action by sending the letter below to Wu
Aiying, China's Minister of Justice and Zhang Yesui, China's
Ambassador to the United Nations, demanding Dhondup
Wangchen's immediate and unconditional release.
Dhondup Wangchen has been detained since March 2008 and has
suffered torture and ill-treatement at the hands of the Chinese
authorities. He is being targeted for simply exercising his
right to freedom of expression, and the charges against him are
part of the Chinese government's widespread campaign to punish
and silence Tibetan voices of dissent.
Help spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, and other
social networking sites.

Subject: Release Dhondup Wangchen Now!
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
I am outraged to learn that Dhondup Wangchen is awaiting trial in
Siling in eastern Tibet (Chinese: Xining, Qinghai Province) on charges
of "inciting separatism." This innocent man has been unjustly held
since March 2008 for simply filming interviews with Tibetans in the
lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I am also deeply concerned about
his well being, as I understand he has been tortured and ill-treated
while in detention.
The
charges against him are clearly designed to punish and silence any
Tibetan who dares to speak out about the devastating impact of China's
policies on the Tibetan people, their culture, and the environment. His
imprisonment is a blatant violation of his right to freedom of
expression. Furthermore, Dhondup Wangchen has been denied access to
lawyers of his own choosing, casting serious doubt that his trial will
be conducted in accordance with international legal standards.
I
call on you to immediately secure the release of Dhond up Wangchen and
drop all the charges against him. I further call on you to conduct an
investigation into the allegations that Dhondup Wangchen has been
tortured and ill-treated, with intent to bring those responsible to
justice.
I will continue to monitor this case closely and will be alerting my government representatives to this travesty of justice.
Sincerely,
aouinet myriam

What's At Stake:
Amnesty International has released the following updated information on Dhondup Wangchen's case:
Dhondup Wangchen was detained in March 2008, in the wake of
widespread protests across Tibet. He is said to have first been
detained on suspicion of "illegal journalism", an offence not
stipulated in Chinese law on criminal liabilities or administrative
punishment. He was then held on suspicion of "inciting subversion of
state power" but the prosecuting authorities returned the case to the
police for further investigation due to insufficient evidence.
After Dhondup Wangchen was first detained, the police questioned him
for several weeks. During this time, he was beaten, punched in the
head, and often deprived food and sleep and kept tied to a chair. As a
consequence, he still suffers from headaches and pain in his arms at
times. His family has never been allowed to meet him.
